PROTEST DEMONSTRATION

IN SUPPORT OF THE ARRESTED AND THE LATHI CHARGED ACTIVISTS IN BIHAR

3.00pm, march 6th, 2014, 3.00pm

bihar bhavan, 5 – kautilya marg, chanakyapuri, new delhi

More than 5000 people under the collective banner of Jan Mukti Sangharsh Vahini, Parchadhari Sangharsh Vahini, Kosi Nav Nirman Manch, Lok Sangharsh Samiti, Lok Sangharsh Morcha, Dalit Shakti Sanghatan and Parivartan Jan Andolan were lathicharged without any provocation, by state police of the Nitish Kumar government on the 5th of March 2014. The non-violent protesters were raising four important demands to the government on implementing the Forest Rights Act 2006;  allotting land to lakhs of farmers who have pattas on paper; rehabilitating the Kosi flood victiims and  families displaced due to the change in the course of the river.

This protest demonstration in front of the Bihar Bhawan is being called in support of the struggling masses across Bihar. The illegal action of lathicharging and arresting the Dalit and Adivasi activists by the Bihar government is to be condemned. This action once again proves the double standard of the Nitish led government where on one hand demands special status for the state and on the other hand does not want to even listen to the legitimate demands of its own citizens even on the eve of the elections! At present nine activists are arrested and sent to the Beur jail.

Delhi Solidarity Group activists, students and concerned citizens to condemned the actions of the Bihar Government and demanded the unconditional release of the activists immediately. DSG demanded that the government responds to the legitimate demands of the people’s movements.

Protest took place in front of the Bihar Bhavan on March 6th at 3.00pm

About Intercultural Resources

Intercultural Resources is a forum for research and political intervention on issues related to the impacts and alternatives to destructive development. Our effort draws upon the social, cultural, material and intellectual resources that have been generated in the course of dialogues between people of different cultures on questions of social justice, development and self-rule. We are of the view that dialogue can sustain plurality and open possibilities for recovery of the ground lost on account of inter-cultural alienation, which is manifest in a variety of forms of violence that we encounter everyday at different levels of social life. Intercultural Resources is based in Delhi, India. Email: ihpindia@gmail.com
