A New York City march on June 28 to celebrate the third year of resistance to the U.S.-sponsored coup in Honduras turned into a protest of the recent parliamentary coup in Paraguay as well. The International Action Center’s Committee in Solidarity with the Caribbean and Latin America, joined by activists from Honduras, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Ecuador, rallied near Times Square and then marched to the United Nations, stopping and chanting at the Honduran and Paraguayan consulates on the way. http://www.workers.org/2012/world/resist_coups_in_latin_america_0712/

Operation Julian Assange: New Evidence on the Role of the U.S.

  While the Obama administration and its allies continue to deny the existence of a sealed US Grand Jury indictment against Julian Assange, further information has come to light about the extent of Washington’s operation against the founder of the WikiLeaks web site. Assange, who is fighting extradition to Sweden on dubious sexual assault allegations, is seeking political asylum in Ecuador and remains inside its embassy in London. Food sovereignty is fundamental to Sumak Kausay, or good living, an indigenous way of life grounded in the construction of social systems that are based on the reciprocity between humans and nature.

That’s how it’s understood by the principal indigenous and campesino organizations in Ecuador, like the National Confederation of Campesino, Indigenous and Black Organizations, or FENOCIN, which is closely aligned to the national government, and the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador, or CONAIE. The two, along with smaller organizations, are looking to join forces to get laws approved that guarantee food that is safe, healthy and permanent.

An early victory for the grassroots organizations was getting into the country’s 2008 Constitution articles on the right to food as well as to food sovereignty.
