Spanish coal miners strike over subsidy cuts

Miners on strike for almost two months now threaten 400km march to Madrid to save their sagging industry,

Miners in northern Spain’s Santa de Sil town have been on strike for almost two months against government’s decision to slash a coal subsidy as part of its austerity programme. Angry coal miners are now preparing to walk more than 400km to the capital Madrid to press their demands, as the government move is considered to damage the dwindling work in coal mines. The coal industry employed more than 50,000 people in 1986, but now barely 8,000 earn their living as miners. Al Jazeera‘s Paul Brennan reports from Santa Cruz de Sil. http://www.aljazeera.com/video/europe/2012/06/2012622215949257686.html

About Intercultural Resources

Intercultural Resources is a forum for research and political intervention on issues related to the impacts and alternatives to destructive development. Our effort draws upon the social, cultural, material and intellectual resources that have been generated in the course of dialogues between people of different cultures on questions of social justice, development and self-rule. We are of the view that dialogue can sustain plurality and open possibilities for recovery of the ground lost on account of inter-cultural alienation, which is manifest in a variety of forms of violence that we encounter everyday at different levels of social life. Intercultural Resources is based in Delhi, India. Email: ihpindia@gmail.com
